In the midst of signing with UK live music booking agency Free Trade (whose roster or artists includes such legends as Wilco, Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, Buffy Saint-Marie, The Milk Carton Kids), Irish Mythen has announced the release of her upcoming album, Little Bones. At the same time Mythen has dropped the album’s first single, “Deep Dark Woods”.
There’s nothing that quite says “everlasting love” with more permanence than a murder ballad, but “Deep Dark Woods” takes more twists than you’d expect. Mythen, the consummate storyteller, has formulated an elaborate backstory to the song.
Rather than the straight forward murder ballad, according to Mythen describes in much greater detail, a story of a young man who walks into an English police station and confesses to having killed a woman.
“He proceeded to tell them who, where, how, and why. They phoned her family to inform them to come to the police station and only that it was about their daughter,” explains Mythen, “Parental instinct, the mother called her daughter… HER DAUGHTER ANSWERED.
“It was all in his head! He made the whole thing up. When they went to his address the entire place was co weed with pictures of her.
“So, although nothing physical happened, no one would ever be the same again. The physiological damage was huge. And they didn’t know him at all. He’s now in a mental institution.”
And that’s Irish Mythen for you. There are stories wrapped in stories and delivered with the knock out performance she’s become legend for.
“I’m so proud of this album. We stripped it back. We didn’t over produce or smooth out some of the rough edges. I always get asked ‘when’s a live album coming so we can truly relive what we’ve seen at the show?’ Well this is as close as I get whilst still being in a studio. This is by far my best work,” says Mythen.
Irish Mythen’s new album, Little Bones, is set for release on Myth Music April 12, 2019 in Canada, Europe, UK and Australia.
