The Stan Rogers Folk Festival is more than just a musical celebration honouring the last of Barrett’s privateers and one of Canada’s most prolific songwriters (and rightfully, Stan Rogers should be honoured with a little more decorum than you and mates probably provide on your stumble home from the pub). The festival is a force of its own – bringing in some of the best musical acts from across Canada – and this year’s lineup is looking particularly impressive.
Today The Stan Rogers Folk Festival announced a hefty lineup today, with the first and foremost headliners being “Luke and “Tom’s Diner” singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega, Canada’s go-to folk artist of the moment Donovan Woods, and New Brunswick’s Jeremy Dutcher whose Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa album earned him both a Polaris Prize and a JUNO award (but we called it first).
The festival also boasts a healthy dose of local artists including: Dave Gunning, Bruce Guthro, Rose Cousins, JP Cormier, Còig, and Gordie MacKeeman & His Rhythm Boys. Where the really shines shines is in their category of “up-and-coming” Atlantic Canadian artists: Gabrielle Papillon, Kellie Loder, Rachel Beck, Reeny Smith, Garrett Mason, T. Thomason, Hello Delaware, The Bombadils, and Villages. There will also be a performance from Prince Edward Island’s classical ensemble the Atlantic String Machine.
The full lineup also includes: The Small Glories, Joey Landreth, Madeleine Roger, Kaia Kater, Lula Wiles, The Weather Station, Justin Nozuka, and Lydia Persaud, Talisk, Scandinavian String Alliance, Garnet Rogers and Malcolm Holcombe.
“There are plenty of fresh faces on the roster, but part of the joy of Stanfest has always been discovering the best new talent in folk music,” says Chris Greencorn, Artistic Director of Stanfest. “We’ve brought together a really vibrant group of artists this year, and I think it’s something our entire audience will be able to dig into.”
The 23rd Stan Rogers Folk Festival takes places in Canso, Nova Scotia from Thursday, July 25 to Sunday, July 28.
