Pulled from their 2018 album, Trouble With The Light, Rick Sparkes + The Enablers’ new video for “Love for Rainy Days,” is a slow burn built on metaphors.
According to Sparkes, the band went in with the intention of creating a music video, but with some uncertainty of which song they should go with from the easy-on-the-ears roots rock album . In the end, they went with the popular vote.
“To me, every song sounds like it could be a single, but in the end, I landed on ‘Love for Rainy Days’ because of the momentum it’s gained over the past few months,” explains Sparkes.
“It debuted on the East Coast Countdown’s Top 10 last November and stayed there four months. Also, Martin Hickey, radio host of Halifax’s CIOE-FM’s shows East Coast Rising and Fresh from the East, ranked it #35 on his Top 100 Songs of 2018 year-end list.”
“For me though, what makes this song so great is that Paul our guitar player does this really interesting [Wilco guitarist] Nels Cline-ish maj7th thing in the chorus that just makes the song.”
Sparkes was also afforded the option of how to produce that video, choosing to wear that hat himself along with Brent Chaisson, who had recorded The Trouble with the Light, as director.
“I didn’t really care about telling a story with the video necessarily; my only request was that it be relatively compelling visually. We shot a whole bunch of footage throughout January and February, took it to Brent’s studio, and just tried to piece it together in an interesting way.
“Discerning viewers will notice the conspicuous absence of rain; this is largely for the same reason why there aren’t any actual jungles in the ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ video and that’s all that really needs to be said about that,” says Sparkes, referring to 1987 Guns N’ Roses hit.
While the video for “Welcome to the Jungle” may not contain any literal jungles, it is abundantly clear that they are referring to the metaphorical concrete jungle of the modern world. What seems clear of “Love for Rainy Days” is that Sparkes is having none of this wet weather.
“Metaphors are hard sometimes,” jokes Sparkes. “Not literally though.”
