If you find yourself lamenting over the weather of late, fear not. Lennie Gallant’s latest single has come just in time to either lift your spirits out of the snow or make you cry over an ex-lover. “There’s A Storm Comin’” from Gallant’s album Time Travel warns of foul weather on the horizon in the midst of relationship turmoil.
The album originally released in August, so it’s fitting that Gallant waited until the icier months before releasing this track as a single.
Like most of Gallant’s work, the lyrics are a definite highlight. He sets the scene of a final confrontation in a relationship against an apocalyptic snowstorm. Although he focuses less on the emotions involved and more on the obstacles the environment is throwing his way, this somehow serves to set the stakes even higher — driving eleven hours in a snowstorm obviously means things are serious.
The song’s surface layer is upbeat, despite the urgency of the lyrics. Because of this, it’s easy to take what you want from it, whether that’s a fun jam to cozy up to on a storm day or a deeply emotional love song. The strumming guitar sets a fun pace, but Gallant’s voice adds a raw edge to the mix. It’s pleading and completely honest. Such depth is a common theme throughout the rest of the album, as many of the songs showcase the rich storytelling Gallant is known for.
The release came just days after the 2019 East Coast Music Awards nominations were announced. Time Travel is nominated for Contemporary Roots Recording of the Year, while Gallant himself secured a nomination for Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year. Gallant also took the opportunity to announce tour dates that will have him setting out from the Maritimes and travelling through Quebec and Ontario.
