Fredericton three-piece Motherhood are back with their latest single, “Bird Chirp.” Known for their cheeky deviations from the norm, the unorthodox rockers have brought us an auditory collage of rock ‘n’ roll that could effectively create three different songs if they so chose it to.
The track begins with a low-key yet spunky jam with just the right amount of twang and cowbell. When Brydon Crain drops his vocals on the tune, the pacing of the track seems to pick up as the hi-hats sneak in. We’re also met with the occasional shakeup in the percussion’s pattern.
As we move along, the strings become a bit more electric before thrusting the bass into the spotlight alongside a curious and brief myriad of wahs
Before long, we get back to the spunky vibe that we were greeted with, followed by the electric strings that we just heard. Suddenly, out come much deeper strings with louder percussion, perfect for walking in a city during a late afternoon whilst sporting a leather jacket. The track ends with a small, relaxed clip of The Hypochondriacs’ “Will The Circle Be Unbroken.”
Listeners will find a plethora of different styles and sounds right away, and just as curious is the music video itself. The trio opted to capture most of their footage by bringing their pooch, Tesla, down to the Nashwaak River, decked out with a GoPro camera. The results are as adorable as they are quirky.
“Bird Chirp” will appear on Motherhood’s upcoming album Dear Bongo, which will be released by Halifax label Forward Music Group.
