Halifax’s versatile, multi-talented quintet Hillsburn have set the example of what a band can accomplish in a year in 2018. One they will close by releasing a deluxe version of their record The Wilder Beyond, which they announced alongside an acoustic version of their song “Everywhere”.
The last act in their impressive year was originally thought to be their upcoming performance at the ECMA New Year’s Eve Bash in Charlottetown, PEI alongside Joel Plaskett and The East Pointers. However, the band will pull out one last trick on February 1st, 2019, reissuing their latest album the day before its anniversary with three added bonus tracks, including the one they released today.
Since the release of their third album in February, they have packed venues like the Marigold Cultural Centre and The Marquee Ballroom. They have toured extensively across Canada as well as a handful of dates in Europe. The album itself garnered six nominations at Nova Scotia Music Week, of which they took home Group Recording of the Year, putting them on the map in Canada’s music landscape.
Their new rendition of “Everywhere” strips most of the original instrumentation back and focuses on the vocals of Paul Aarntzen. Off the top we hear heartfelt grand piano in place of the low-end violin and walking drums, both of which are rearranged to provide more atmospheric overtones. Aarntzen turns down the volume, but still follows most of the same trajectory on his original vocals, hitting all the exuberant moments that make the song great.
The band has successfully turned one of their most energetic cuts on their new record into an intimate treat that is just as beautiful, once again connecting with those who listen to them in a way only they can.
